A man who called a police officer “a weasel” after being discovered banging on the windows of a Belfast hotel has been jailed for six months.

Niall Napier subjected the constable to a foul-mouthed tirade during the city centre encounter earlier this year.

The 36-year-old Cookstown man, of no fixed abode, was convicted of disorderly behaviour and resisting police.

Belfast Magistrates Court heard he had been banging on windows outside Ten Square Hotel in the early hours of August 3.

When a PSNI constable spoke to the defendant at the scene on Donegall Square South he refused to leave and replied: “F*** off you f****** piece of s***.”

Napier then declared: “You’re not a real police officer, you’re a weasel.”

He attempted to push his way past the constable, but was detained in the area.

Imposing a three-month sentence for the offences, District Judge Anne Marshall also ordered Napier to serve a further three months for breaching a previously suspended term.

She said: “It’s on his own head… a total of six months custody.”
