“John Hume was a member of the European Parliament for 25 years, from 1979 to 2004. Through his membership of the Party of European Socialists and his relationship with senior European leaders, he was able to positively influence policy outcomes in relation to regional policy, boosting economic growth and improving citizens’ quality of life through strategic investment,” Mr Attwood said.

The Foundation secretary said Mr Hume’s mission to build peace and reconciliation in Ireland was inspired by the European Union.
