'Considerable concern' in Lurgan as puppy killed by larger dogs

A pet puppy has been killed in a "terrifying" attack by two larger dogs in Co Armagh.

The incident happened in Lurgan's William Street area on Friday afternoon, and it is feared the dogs responsible for mauling the puppy were American XL Bullies.

Plans are underway to ban the breed in Britain by the end of the year following a series of attacks, but the dogs will not be outlawed in Northern Ireland.

A PSNI spokesperson said following Friday's report of an attack on the puppy: “The injured dog was taken to a local vet by its owner.

“Police made contact with the owner of the two dogs and the matter was referred to the council dog warden.”

It has been claimed in a social media post that the puppy, who was named Bruno, was set upon by two XL Bullies in Lurgan's Lough Road area as the pup's owner took him for a walk.

Bruno's owner was said to have picked him up to protect him, but the larger dogs knocked the owner to the ground and pulled the puppy away.

It was reported the puppy later succumbed to his injuries afte being taken to a vet.

Lurgan Sinn Féin councillor Keith Haughian said: “This was a terrifying incident for the owner who witnessed her beloved pet being attacked by two much larger dogs.

“There is considerable concern in the local community about this incident. I will be engaging with the police and dog warden to ensure all necessary action is taken to protect the public.”
