SEVERAL homes have been evacuated in east Belfast following the discovery of a suspicious object.

The security alert was sparked on Thursday afternoon and police have closed Glenlea Park from the junction of Garnerville Road and Glendhu Park.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes as the alert continues, and a PSNI spokesperson said: "Ammunition Technical Officers are in attendance and a number of residents have been evacuated from their homes."

The spokesperson added: "A further update will follow in due course."

The nearby Garnerville Presbyterian Church opened its doors to accommodate evacuated residents.

East Belfast DUP MLA Joanne Bunting said: "It's appalling that residents have had to evacuate and are being disrupted in this way. These days should be long behind us. Anyone with information should bring it to the attention of the police without delay."
