A PASSENGER has died following a road crash on the A5 in Co Tyrone on Friday.

One vehicle was involved in the incident on the Curr Road shortly before 11.30am.

The driver and passenger of the white Mercedes GLA 200 were both taken to hospital on Friday.

One of the casualties was taken to Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Derry, while the other was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Police said the driver of the vehicle remains critically ill in hospital. However, in a statement, the PSNI confirmed on Sunday that the passenger had died from their injuries.

No details on the age or gender of the casualties have been disclosed at this time.

The A5 was closed for around 11 hours on Friday following the crash, resulting in significant disruption on the busy carriageway.

Air Ambulance Northern Ireland also attended the scene.

Sergeant Braiden from the PSNI's Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our investigation is under way and we are appealing to anyone who was travelling in the area at the time of the collision or who has dash-cam footage to please contact us on 101 quoting quote reference number 659 of 21/07/23.”

The passenger is the fourth person to die on the A5 road close to the village of Beragh in less than 10 months.

Killyclogher GAA player John Rafferty (21), and 66-year-old Portadown motorcyclist David Gilmore, both lost their lives on the same stretch of the A5 Curr Road in October 2022.

Local pensioner Sammy Patterson, who was aged in his 80s, also died on the A5 Curr Road in September 2022.

Two young men from the Beragh area and a third man from Clogher were killed a few miles further along the A5 at Garvaghey in December 2021.

Three members of the same family were also killed on the A5 near Aughnacloy in April this year.

The latest fatality brings the number of deaths on the A5 since 2006 to 52.

Some 47 people have died on the road since the Executive agreed to proceed with a major new dual carriageway from the border at Aughnacloy to the outskirts of Derry City in July 2007.

The campaign to progress the upgrade of the notorious road has stepped up in the past year, with Tyrone GAA becoming the driving force behind a new lobby group.

The group has been urging the Irish Government to step up its financial contribution to the major infrastructure project, now estimated to cost around £1.6 billion.
