In keeping with a long-standing pattern, many shops and public services remained closed on July 13 despite it not being an official bank or public holiday.

This included Translink running a holiday timetable on Wednesday and Thursday.

Multiple libraries remained closed to the public on the 13th while bin collection dates were also adjusted for residents in the Belfast City Council area, with collections due on Thursday moved to this weekend.

A Translink spokesperson said: “We operate altered timetables at various stages through the year, mainly coinciding with holiday periods.

“For example, over Christmas/New Year, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter and the July holidays.

“Our timetables also change to reflect school term transport.”

Passengers can check the Translink website for full timetable details.

Crowds turn out for annual Twelfth parades across the north

What is the Twelfth of July?

Information listed online with NI Direct states that bank holidays are when banks and many other businesses are closed, while public holidays are those observed through custom such as Christmas Day.

Northern Ireland typically has around 10 official holidays a year, but more can be added to celebrate special occasions such as the coronation of King Charles in May.

Just three more remain this year, the summer bank holiday on Monday, August 28, as well as Christmas and Boxing Day.

When the usual date falls on a weekend, the ‘substitute day’ is normally on the following Monday.

While there is no statutory right to paid leave on public holidays, many people still get the day off work.

Any right to time off or extra pay also depends upon an individual’s contract of employment.
