Margot Robbie praises Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan at Barbie premiere

Actor Margot Robbie heaped praise on ‘Derry Girl’ Nicola Coughlan at the premiere of the highly anticipated Barbie movie.

The Galway actress is known for her roles as Clare Devlin in the Channel 4 sitcom Derry Girls and Penelope Featherington in Netflix’s period drama Bridgerton.

“Isn’t she just the best,” said Ms Robbie, “I told you today, I just love Ireland, I love the Irish, Nicola being in the movie is just another icing on the cake for the Barbie.”

 The Irish actress takes on the role of diplomat Barbie in the film. She wore a sliver satin dress with a sparkling bodice and droplet glass jewels stitched across it to the premiere, which Twitter users have compared to a dress worn by Barbie in the 2003 film ‘Barbie of Swan Lake.’

Star-studded Barbie soundtrack line-up revealed

The pink carpet was rolled out on Wednesday night in Leicester Square as famous faces from around the world came to watch director Greta Gerwig’s latest film. The guest list included real life Derry girl Nadine Coyle who arrived wearing a hot pink suit with black buttons giving the impression of a business Barbie.

Ms Coughlan decided to become an actress at the age of five after watching her older sister perform in a school play.

She graduated with a degree in English and Classical Civilisation from the National University of Ireland, Galway. Then went on to train in England at the Oxford School of Drama and Birmingham School of Acting.

Her big break came in 2018 when Ms Coughlan starred as Clare Devlin one of the main characters in Lisa McGee’s Derry Girls.

Additionally, she played Hannah Dalton in Harlots a period drama set in 18th- century London as well as making her West End debut in The Donmar Warehouse’s production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

In December 2019 it was announced that Ms Coughlan had been cast in the Netflix series Bridgerton which premiered in December 2020. The drama is based on the best-selling series by Julia Quinn.  Coughlan plays Penelope Feathering, a fan favourite and along with co-star Luke Newton will be taking the lead in season three the release date of which is yet to be announced.
