Man injured and woman 'shaken' after gang armed with weapons target Portstewart house

A man has been left with injuries after confronting a group of people armed with weapons who were attempting to break into a property in Portstewart.

The man and a woman were inside the house in the Swilly Close area of the Co Derry town when the incident happened on Saturday evening.

A report was made to police that two men and two women armed with weapons were attempting to break into the property shortly before 8.30pm.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “A man and woman were both inside the property during the attack. The man sustained minor injuries after confronting the suspects and received medical treatment at the scene.

“Thankfully, the woman was uninjured but was left shaken by what happened."

Police arrived after the suspects had left in a car, and found "extensive damage" caused to windows at the front and rear of the property.

Officers stopped a  car a short time later on the Portmore Road, and arrested a 28-year-old woman, a 34-year-old man, a 31-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

All four remained in police custody on Sunday evening assisting police with enquiries.

"This was a terrifying experience for the occupants of the property and our investigation is now underway to establish what happened, who was involved and a motive," the PSNI spokesperson added.

“We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time, and saw anything suspicious, to call police on 101, quoting reference number 1752 of 08/07/23."
