A man who drowned in Greece has been named locally as Rory Deegan from Co Laois.

The 22-year-old is understood to have been found unresponsive in a swimming pool by friends on Sunday.

According to reports in Greek media, Mr. Deegan was declared dead when he arrived at Zakynthos Hospital.

Mr Deegan attended the Technological University of Shannon in Limerick city and was a former pupil of Colaiste Mhuire in Johnstown.

RTÉ reported that he is from a well-known family who run a supermarket in Urlingford, Co Kilkenny.

Local councillor John King told The Mirror: “His family are very well respected in the local community and involved in GAA circles. They are from a farming and business background.

“I want to sympathise with the family at this very difficult time, they have the support of everyone in the local and wider community.

“Nobody wants news like this coming through the door. The biggest fear and all parents of children will say the same, they want them to go safe and come home safe,” he said.

Mr Deegan played for The Harps GAA.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
