Runners are frantically planning a Planes, Trains and Automobiles-type journey to reach Inis Meáin for Ireland's newest weekly parkrun.

Starting on June 3, it is expected to attract visitors from across Ireland and Britain.

Since learning of the launch date in recent days, many have been plotting their journey to sparsely-populated island in Galway Bay.

The event will be allowed to start later in the morning, at 11am, compared to the 9:30am starts everywhere else. This is to help those arriving by boat. Others are planning to take short flights to avoid missing out on the inaugural event.

David Moan from Dungannon said his journey would start at 4am.

"My son Matthew and I will be leaving Dungannon at stupid o'clock on Saturday for a flight at 9am from Connemara airport and will return at 4.45pm. We will stay in Galway on the Saturday night. We would not miss it," he said.

Inis Meáin has a population of about 185, making it the smallest of the Aran Islands in terms of population. It is one of the most important strongholds of traditional Irish culture and is predominantly Irish-speaking.

There is no park, as such, on the island, so it will join a small number of events in Ireland that operate elsewhere.

Events have popped up on beaches, along greenways, on island roads, college campuses and even prisons.

Bere Island in west Cork stages a stunning run on the island's roads. Runners can enjoy breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Portrush takes place on its East Strand beach. It is popular among tourists and challenging as tides determine whether the run is on hard or soft sand.
