A community in Co Armagh has been left "heartbroken" following the death of a teenage GAA player.

Caoimhín Mallon died "suddenly and unexpectedly" at Craigavon Area Hospital on Sunday, prompting tributes to the 15-year-old, who was a pupil at Lurgan's St Ronan's College.

It is understood the teenager, who had asthma, collapsed at his home early on Sunday morning, before being rushed to hospital where he later died.

A fundraising page has been set up online to raise money for the Asthma + Lung UK charity following his death.

In a social media post on Monday, a spokesperson for St Ronan's College said the school community learned of the teenager's death with "deep sadness".

"We send our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to Caoimhín's family and friends at this sad time. St Ronan, pray for them. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis. Amen," the post added.

The teen was a member of Naomh Pól CLG in Lurgan, which suspended all club activity for the week upon learning of their young player's passing.

Caoimhín's father Jude, a Sinn Féin candidate for Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, is a member of the club's committee, while his mother Donna is also a member of the club.

"We wish to offer our deepest sympathy to the entire family circle. Mary Queen of the Gael pray for him," a club spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the YMCA Lurgan youth club said its members were "deeply saddened" at the loss of Caoimhín, who they described in a statement as a "quiet, polite and funny young man".

"We send our thoughts, prayers and condolences to Caoimhín’s family and friends at this sad time."

They added: "Our staff are here for any young people who may need support at this time."

A spokesperson for the Drumgor Detached Youth Work Project in Craigavon said its team also knew Caoimhín as someone who was "always pleasant and kind".

They added in a post: "He certainly kept our Youth Workers engaged with his wisdom and banter."

A death notice described the teenager as a "much-loved son of Donna and Jude and loving brother of Saoirse and Dáire, cherished grandson of Pat and Philip Mallon and Marie Harvey and Joe Toman".

A spokesperson for the family told The Irish News that the teenager's parents and wider family wished to thank the community in Lurgan and elsewhere "for their incredible outpouring of support" following their loss.

A funeral will take place at St Paul’s Church in Lurgan on Thursday, before burial at St Colman’s Cemetery.
