A former senior investigation officer with the Garda National Child Protection Unit is to lead a review of safeguarding policies at a Co Armagh club.

It follows the jailing of a former Crossmaglen treasurer Thomas McKenna for a litany of sex crimes against young boys.

McKenna, (62), with a given address at Maghaberry Prison, was sentenced to 16 years in prison over 162 sexual abuse offences including serious sexual assault, indecent assault, voyeurism and possession of an indecent image of a child.

His offending spanned a 30-year period from 1989 to 2018 and involved 23 male victims, ranging from 14 to 39 years of age.

He will be placed on the Sex Offenders' Register indefinitely.

The GAA already announced it has commissioned "an independent review of the child and adult safeguarding policies, procedures and practices relating to Crossmaglen Rangers Cumann Lúthchleas Gael (CLG)".

On Friday, it said Michael Lynch, a former senior investigation officer with the Garda National Child Protection Unit will lead the review.

Mr Lynch has also acted as a safeguarding consultant to the United Nations, European Commission, Scouting Ireland and the Council of Europe.

"Two liaison persons have also been appointed to assist the review team in Louise Monaghan, an independent safeguarding consultant and trainer and Barney Herron, former senior social worker with the Family and Childcare Programme with Belfast Trust and currently employed as an independent safeguarding consultant and is the GAA County Antrim Children’s Officer in a voluntary capacity," the GAA said.

"Should any person wish to make contact with the review team they may do so in confidence at review.cmr@gmail.com."
