A man from Achill Island in Co Mayo has died while battling Russian forces in Ukraine, it has been confirmed by his family.

Finbar Cafferkey, who was in his forties and who had traveled to Ukraine to volunteer in the conflict following the Russian invasion, is understood to have died in the eastern part of the country earlier this week.

His father Tom, from Achill's Cashel area, confirmed his son's death on Thursday to reporters.

Mr Cafferkey had previously volunteered with Kurdish militia in Syria during their conflict with ISIS, and had also taken part in protests in Co Mayo against the controversial Corrib gas project.

His family were due to issue a statement on Thursday evening.

The Republic's Department of Foreign Affairs said it was aware of the case and is providing consular assistance for the family.
