A YOUNG camogie player has earned the nickname 'Lee Hurley Oswald' on social media after hitting a shot that saw a sliotar sail past the head of US President Joe Biden as he watched a training session during his visit to Dublin.

The president was standing at the sidelines of a makeshift pitch at Farmleigh House in the city's Phoenix Park, when the incident happened on Thursday.

Mr Biden was standing chatting with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar while watching girls from Dublin GAA cubs demonstrate camogie on his final full day in Ireland.

St Brigid's GAA member Lucy Bourke, whose team was taking on fellow Castleknock club St Oliver Plunkett’s Eoghan Ruadh for the sporting demonstration, struck a shot that saw the sliotar fly close to Mr Biden.

Unperturbed at the near-miss, the president began jogging to fetch the ball before 11-year-old Lucy got there first.

Footage of the shot was shared on social media, with wags dubbing Lucy 'Lee Hurley Oswald' for almost hitting the 80-year-old president with the shot.

The gag refers to Lee Harvey Oswald, who infamously assassinated President John F Kennedy with a sniper rifle in Dallas, Texas in 1963.

The young player spoke with the Irish Times following the incident, and said of her wayward strike: “I thought everyone was going to be giving out to me because it was such a bad shot, but instead everyone was laughing.”
