A woman (34) has been arrested in connection with the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell.

She is the eleventh person arrested in connection with the February 22 shooting of the senior police officer as he packed up his car following a youth football coaching session at a sports complex near Omagh.

DCI Caldwell was shot multiple times while his young son was nearby and the attack has been linked to the New IRA dissident republican group.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and assisting offenders following the search of a property in the Omagh area, and later released pending further enquiries.

Last week police released new CCTV footage of a car used by the gunmen in the shooting  on the Killyclogher Road. The registration number of the blue Ford Fiesta was MGZ 6242 but police say it was fitted with false plates reading FRZ 8414 before the attac

The car was recorded travelling into Coalisland at around 10pm on the night of February 21. The footage shows the vehicle leaving the scene of the attack. Police believe a second blue Ford Fiesta was also used in the attack which had registration number RLZ 9805 and was bought in Glengormley towards the end of January.

“It was then driven from Belfast at approximately 1pm on Wednesday 22 February – the day of the attack on John – and travelled along the M1 in the direction of Coalisland and Omagh. It was found burnt out in the Ardboe Industrial Estate the following day, Thursday 23 February," police said.
