Man in 60s beaten with iron bars by masked gang who tried to shoot him

A MASKED gang used iron bars and a sledgehammer to beat a man in his 60s at his home in Co Antrim.

One of the four or five strong gang attempted to shoot the man in the legs but the gun would not fire, the PSNI said.

A woman in her 80s was also injured during the “terrifying experience” at the house in the Elmwood Park area of Bushmills, Co Antrim on Thursday.

The PSNI said the man was ordered to lie on a bed. The handgun was held to his legs and several attempts were made to fire the weapon without success, police added

He was then assaulted with iron bars and a sledgehammer. He suffered a head injury.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The elderly woman suffered an injury to her arm.

."This was a terrifying experience for the occupants of the property and our investigation is now under way to establish what happened, who was involved and a motive," a Detective Inspector Finlay said.

The suspects were all dressed in dark clothing. They fled the scene on foot.

The police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
