THE sudden death of a Co Tyrone father and respected GAA club member has left his family and community "devastated".

Shaun Conroy (49) who died on Tuesday was a member of the Errigal Ciaran GAA club near Sixmilecross.

"Shaun was involved in every facet of club life, his love of all things Errigal Ciaran has been deep rooted for many years," a statement read.

"First and foremost, a supporter of all our teams at every level, a steward, a coach of our underage, an umpire."

Having worked as a club photographer and caretaker, the club added: "He has been such a loyal clubman, it is hard to express the sadness and shock within our community. As a mark of respect all club activities are suspended.

"A family steeped in our tradition has been left devastated. They have lost such a loving father who idolised all his children, a husband- who always seemed to be at his happiest with Caroline at his side. Our thoughts and prayers are with Caroline, Darragh, Caoimhe, Neil and Brian."

Mr Conroy's funeral will take place this Friday, with further details to be announced.

Many shared their own messages of sympathy for the family on the The Errigal Ciaran GAA page.

One woman wrote: "Sometimes there simply are no words. So sorry to hear this news, may Shaun rest in peace and may Caroline, the children (and) all the extended Conroy family be given the strength to get through these difficult days. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time."

Another said: "Devastating news to hear this evening Shaun had been a huge support and role model for our children and club . He will be sorely missed within our community."
