GAA pundit Joe Brolly has received a wedding present from Joe Biden, following his marriage to a distant relative of the US president.

Mr Biden, a third cousin of Mr Brolly's wife, podcaster Laurita Blewitt, missed their nuptials last August at the Ice House Hotel in Co Mayo.

The couple said an invite had been sent to the president, but security requirements meant it would have been a "nightmare" to arrange his visit.

Mr Brolly and Ms Blewitt had attended last year's St Patrick's Day festivities in Washington DC.

In an image posted to his Twitter page yesterday, Mr Brolly displayed a pair of cufflinks featuring the official Seal of the President of the United States, that had been sent by Mr Biden.

"Belated wedding present just arrived from the big guy," he wrote.

The Derry All-Ireland winning former footballer has struck up a friendship with Mr Biden in recent years, meeting him during a visit to Co Mayo in 2017 before he became president in 2021.

Mr Brolly has spoken of the president as a "very honourable man" and was among the first to congratulate him on his election win the day after the result was called in 2020, with a speakercall while Mr Biden was at his family home in Delaware.

Following last year's St Patrick's celebrations at the White House, Mr Brolly tweeted an image of the pair sharing a joke, with the caption "Two Irishmen walk into the Whitehouse..."
