A NUMBER of homes and businesses in Portadown have been evacuated following a "major" gas leak in the town.

Emergency services were called to the Bridge Street area on Thursday evening, while police closed the area to motorists.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "A number of homes in the area have been evacuated.

"Please avoid the area if possible."

Portadown Town Hall in nearby Edward Street has been opened to accommodate evacuated residents.

DUP Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart described the incident as a "major" gas leak, adding in a social media post: "I am liaising with the PSNI and will keep people updated on the situation."
