A BELFAST woman claimed she was raped by her partner after returning home from hospital following a procedure, a court has heard.

The woman's former partner, who can't be named to protect her identity, is standing trial at Belfast Crown Court charged with rape in December 2017 - a charge he denies.

He has also been charged with, and denies, seven charges of common assault against her and four counts of assaulting her occasioning actual bodily harm on dates between June 2016 and March 2018.

A jury heard the couple were in a relationship for around two years before splitting up in 2018.

In 2019 she contacted the PSNI to allege she had been assaulted by her partner, who is 34 and from Co Antrim.

In April 2019 she took part in an interview with police regarding her allegations and a recording of this interview was played to the jury.

In the recording, the 31-year old said that at the end of December 2017, she had a procedure at hospital then returned to her west Belfast home.

She told police that as a result of the procedure she was "walking funny" and that her partner mocked her.

The woman said she then went upstairs and got changed into a nightdress before coming back down to the living room.

The complainant said her partner then kissed her "forcefully".

She said her partner then put his hands on her shoulders, shoved her to the floor and sexually assaulted her.

The woman also told police her partner was controlling and assaulted her on several occasions during their relationship, including grabbing her by the neck and throwing her onto a bed.
