THE joint funeral for the parents of independent assembly member Alex Easton who died in a house fire is due to take place in Co Down on Saturday.

A service of thanksgiving for Alex and Ann Easton will be held in Bangor Abbey before burial in Sixmilecross.

The couple, who were both aged in their eighties, died after a blaze broke out at their home in the Dellmount Park area of Bangor on Monday morning.

Care workers, who visited the couple regularly, noticed a blaze in the front living-room of the detached property.

Alex Easton was discovered at the back of the property, where it is thought he may have been trying to raise the alarm. It is believed the couple suffered heavy smoke inhalation.

Police said the couple were treated for injuries, but both died at the scene.

Alex Easton, who has represented North Down since 2003, visited the scene shortly after the fire.

Forensic officers yesterday returned to a property for further examinations. Floral tributes were also left outside the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. A PSNI spokesperson said its officers were also conducting enquiries as part of the probe.

A family statement, issued via Mr Easton, said they "deeply appreciate the work of the police service, fire service, ambulance service, air ambulance service and all emergency responders - we pay tribute to their professionalism and care".

"At this time of family bereavement and grief we request the family’s privacy is respected to allow us time and space as we deal with our loss," they said.

"As a family we are thankful for all the prayers and messages of condolence that we have received."

The joint funeral is due to be held at Bangor Abbey at 11am followed by interment in St Michael’s Parish Churchyard, Sixmilecross.

The couple are survived by their children Christopher, Lorraine and Alex and wider family circle.
