BBC NI reporter and presenter Rick Faragher has said he is "forever indebted" to NHS staff after being treated in a Belfast hospital for pneumonia.

The journalist, who is originally from the Isle of Man, revealed his illness in a tweet yesterday, accompanied by pictures of him in Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital.

He revealed it was a "rough few days" after having contracted the lung infection.

The former sports reporter, who has since presented podcasts for the BBC and stood in as a presenter on BBC Radio Ulster's Evening Extra programme, received support online from wellwishers, including the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust who thanked him for his support of staff.

Speaking of his condition, Mr Faragher said in his tweet: "Pneumonia, pleurisy and clotting in both lungs. Rough few days.

"My eternal gratitude to everyone at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital. They’ve held my hand and given care and support beyond words."

He added: "Forever indebted to our NHS workers."

The broadcaster joined the BBC nine years ago after starting his journalism career as a sports reporter for Isle of Man Newspapers before working in Manx TV and radio.

He had previously completed a Masters in Journalism at Ulster University.

Responding to his tweet, the Belfast Trust said his words "will mean a lot to our staff" and wished him "a speedy recovery".

Others wellwishers included his BBC NI colleague and weather presenter Barra Best, who wrote: "Get well soon mate."
