AROUND 10,000 fans packed the SSE Arena in Belfast to see Rod Stewart - but some left a little disappointed he did not sing his now famous version of Grace.

The Scottish singer-songwriter wowed fans mostly with his older hits but did not add the post-Easter Rising song.

This was in contrast to the 77-year-old’s shows in Dublin and Glasgow where it was not only on the playlist but with a backdrop showing the Rising leader Joseph Plunkett, Grace Gifford and images of Kilmainham Jail where they married on the day he was executed. There were also huge images of the Proclamation and scenes from the Rising.

Some fans bemoaned the failure to sing Grace, with one describing the Belfast show on social media as otherwise “incredible”.

“He sings this love song so beautifully,” they added.

Others were more forceful, with one expressing a bit of rage and another suggesting he paid £400 for “my wife to hear Grace”.

As related in the famous ballad, written in 1985 by brothers Frank and Seán O'Meara, the poet Grace rushes to Kilmainham when she receives word Joseph is to be executed. They marry hours before he is shot.
