An investigation has been launched after a woman died after a hit and run in Co Derry.

The woman, who has not been named, died after a collision on the Dunhill Road, between Coleraine and Limavady, on Tuesday evening.

Police say they received a report from a passing motorist who was concerned for the safety of pedestrian who was walking on the Dunhill Road.

Police officers later located the body of a woman who, it is believed, was struck by a vehicle which failed to remain at the scene.

The road was closed before being later reopened and police say they are making efforts to identify the vehicle.

Detective Inspector Peter MacCionáoith said appealed for anyone who was travelling along the Dunhill Road at around 7pm on Tuesday to make contact.

Causeway Coast and Glens DUP councillor Philip Anderson offered his condolences.

“It’s sad at this time of the year and I’m thinking of the woman’s family,” she said.

East Derry assembly member Claire Sugden said: “This is a horrific thing to happen and my deepest sympathies go out to anyone who knew the woman who has now sadly passed away.

“It would be dreadful at any time of year, but during the Christmas period tragedies such as this can hit families even harder.”
