A BICYCLE parking scheme in Belfast city centre is set to expand to eight other locations with £30,000 of grant funding.

The city's first ever secure cycle park opened at CastleCourt Shopping Centre last month, and Belfast City Council is now asking businesses to find space for more.

Ryan Murphy, who chairs the council's growth and regeneration committee, said he hoped it would encourage more people out of their cars.

“As we’ve shown with the recent launch of our Active Travel Hub at Cathedral Gardens, The Bike Yard at CastleCourt and covered cycle parking at various locations throughout the city, we’re keen to prioritise walking and wheeling in Belfast - creating lively, safe and green streets and removing barriers to movement between the city centre and surrounding communities," he said.

"Providing these additional secure cycle parking facilities is another small, but important step to encouraging people to move away from relying on their cars to get around."

Potential sites for the new storage facilities could include surface car parks, multi-storey car parks or existing retail units.

Mr Murphy also suggested that operators could repurpose vacant units in the city centre and bring them back into use.

Those keen to deliver and maintain safe, secure and accessible cycle parking at sites outside Belfast city centre, but within the Belfast City Council boundary are invited to submit an expression of interest before November 21 2022.
