POLICE have renewed a warning over keyless car thefts after a vehicle was stolen from outside a property in Co Derry.

A black Range Rover Velar was stolen from the Ervey Court area of Eglinton sometime between 4.30pm on Sunday October 30 and 1.30pm the following day.

Police are treating it as a keyless theft and believe the car may have been taken over the border into Co Donegal.

They have appealed for witnesses, those with information, or anyone offered a vehicle of that make for sale in suspicious circumstances to contact the non-emergency 101 number.

The theft follows a warning in July that keyless thefts are on the rise in the north.

That month it was estimated by police that up to 35 vehicles had been stolen using technology to override the lock system in the previous 11 months.

Keyless thefts occur when the vehicle is opened by redirecting the wireless signal from the owner's key fob.

A PSNI spokesperson said thieves armed with the tech only need to be within a few metres of owner's keys in order to access the signal.

Owners of such vehicles are being advised to keep key fobs and spares away from doors and windows, or use a signal blocking pouch such as a Faraday bag.

Owners are also urged to use steering wheel locks and car alarms, or to park cars in garages where possible.

"We’re urging the public to be vigilant, especially those with keyless entry cars. The cars these thieves target are usually extremely expensive, so the loss is great," they said.
