A nationalist councillor has claimed that the Paramilitary Crime Task Force is investigating Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.

Independent councillor Padraig McShane said he has been told by the PSNI that the specialist unit is probing "issues pertaining" to the controversial council.

The Paramilitary Crime Task Force (PCTF) involves PSNI, the National Crime Agency and Revenue and Customs officials.

Earlier this year the audit office found that two land deals agreed by the council may not have been lawful.

Mr McShane and TUV leader Jim Allister had separately asked the audit office to examine the council's role in land deals.

Mr McShane last night said police have told him that the PCTF are investigating the council.

“After speaking with the PSNI I can confirm that the Paramilitary Crime Task Force (PCTF) are investigating issues pertaining to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council," he said.

“These include issues around the recent extraordinary audit conducted by the Northern Ireland Audit Office into land transactions and asset disposals by the council.

"Going further, they appear to include other asset realisation and financial issues in the council."

Asked if the PCFT were investigating, the PSNI press office released an earlier statement which did not answer the question.

Meanwhile, the DUP has still not responded after it emerged that mobile phones belonging to Causeway Coast and Glens councillor George Duddy and his former election agent Leanne Abernethy were seized by the PSNI last week.

The pair are also members of the Causeway Coast and Glens Policing and Community Safety Partnership.
