The New IRA has said it was responsible for firing shots at a house in Co Tyrone at the weekend.

No-one was injured after shots were fired at the property in the Lake View Cottages area of Ardboe at around 10.15pm on Sunday.

Police say damage was caused to windows at the front and rear of the property, which was empty.

A spokesman for the PSNI said they are also investigating reports that masked men were seen in the area at the time.

In a statement last night the New IRA said it carried out the gun attack and ordered the occupants to leave the area within seven days.

It is understood more than one weapon was used in the gun attack.

SDLP Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone said multiple shots were fired at the house.

“This attack on a home in a residential area is deeply distressing to the local community who want to be able to live their lives in peace without it being disrupted,” he said.

“We’re lucky that nobody was seriously hurt or worse in this incident, but substantial damage was caused to the house in question.

Mr McGlone described the gun attack as “reckless”.

“There is no place for masked men to be roaming our streets and to open fire on a house in a built-up area is unbelievably reckless, showing no respect for people living in this area or their safety.”
