SINN Féin has laughed off suggestions that post boxes in Yorkshire may have been painted green to highlight the party's success in the assembly elections.

Several red post boxes in Huddersfield have been painted green over the last few days.

There was initial speculation that a Green party supporter may have been behind the stunt.

However, Green party councillor Andrew Cooper told Yorkshire Live: "Nothing to do with us and not the sort of thing the Green party would do."

Conservative councillor Bernard McGuin then suggested a Sinn Féin supporter could be involved.

"I am astonished by what has happened but it seems that someone involved in Sinn Féin could be involved here," he said.

A Sinn Féin spokesman said: "This is news to us."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We do not know who repainted these postboxes, and are reporting this matter to the police.

"We will be repainting the boxes in the iconic red as soon as possible."
