FORMER Down GAA captain Darragh O'Hanlon has wed just months after retiring from Gaelic football due to injury.
Love was in the air as the ex-Kilcoo and Down player married Nicole Cunningham on Friday.
The happy couple are understood to have celebrated their special day with family and friends at a reception at Cabra Castle in Co Cavan.
It comes just months after Mr O'Hanlon was forced to retire from playing aged 28 due to debilitating back and knee injuries. He had underwent a spinal operation in 2019, which led to him having a disc removed.
But following a 13-month recovery, he sustained a cruciate ligament injury and was later forced to hang up his boots.
In an emotional post announcing his retirement last December, Mr O'Hanlon said his "body can no longer take much more".
"In the last 3-4 seasons I have went through spinal surgery and two serious knee surgeries, countless steroid injections," he said.
"In the last few days I have had a brace fitted to wear most of the day to tie me over until we get married in April and after that I am due to get major knee surgery.
"As much as football means to me in this life it's emotionally and physically tough to let go especially when football has been a massive part of my life since a very young age and watching Kilcoo especially do so well I think what could have been, but that’s life and not everything ends in a fairytale."
Down GAA was among those to send their best wishes to the happy couple.
In a post on social media ahead of the nuptials, it sent their "best wishes from all at Down GAA to current U20 Selector and former Down/Kilcoo player Darragh O’Hanlon and wife-to-be Nicole Cunningham on their wedding day".
"We wish you well for today’s celebration and may you have many happy years together."
Kilcoo GAA also wished the couple "best of luck" on their wedding day.
