SSE Airtricity and Budget Energy have announced price increases for residential customers.

The Consumer Council says the price hike will effect three in 10 households.

SSE Airtricity is the north’s second largest electricity supplier, and Budget Energy is the fourth.

SSE Airtricity has announced a 33% increase, effective from June 1 while Budget Energy will increase prices by 27% from May 27.

Last month rival firm Electric Ireland announced a 30% increase which comes into effect on May 1.

The Consumer Council said today's announcement was "the latest in a stream of bad news".

It has calculated that the SSE standard tariff for credit meter and pay-as-you-go customers will increase by £248 to just over £1,000 a year.

Budget Energy's typical customer with a credit meter will see their bill rise by about £280 a year while pay-as-you-go customers will see a £275 jump.

Peter McClenaghan, Director of Infrastructure and Sustainability at the Consumer Council, said anyone struggling to pay utility bills should immediately contact their supplier.

"There are measures that can be put in place to help you. Unfortunately, prices are set to stay high for the foreseeable future so the Consumer Council will continue to push for significantly improved initiatives to help consumers who are experiencing payment difficulties.”

The managing director of SSE Airtricity Klair Neenan said the price increase would be "disappointing" for customers.

Paul Kenny, General Mmanager of Budget Energy, said the war in Ukraine had made the Eurioean gas supply situation "more challenging than ever before".
