Barry's Portrush is set to reopen under a new name, with new operators, by Easter.

PLANS are underway to reopen the former Barry's amusement park in Portrush in time for Easter.

The site, which was run by the Trufelli family in the Co Antrim coastal town since 1926, was marketed as a development opportunity last year after the owners announced in 2019 that it was up for sale.

However, following confirmation of the sale to businessman Michael Herbert, the operators of a similar amusement site in Co Galway secured a new long-term lease of the site.

The Curry family, who run Curry's Fun Park in Salthill, have said they now aim to reopen the iconic Portrush venue in time for the Easter holiday crowds.

It is understood the site will be renamed with the 'Curry's' title.

Owen Curry, who has paid tribute to the Trufellis' "incredible contribution" to the town over the decades, said: "We are delighted to have secured such a prominent trading location that is very important to Portrush and the wider north coast area.

"We look forward to building on that great foundation - Portrush is an iconic destination in Northern Ireland for locals and visitors alike. We are very excited by the prospect of operating this legendary amusement park and we look forward to getting started."
