BELFAST-BORN actor and director Kenneth Branagh will be honoured at the US-Ireland Alliance's Oscar Wilde Awards on March 24.

Sir Kenneth's new film, Belfast, set at the start of the Troubles, has received huge critical acclaim, including 11 nominations at the British Independent Film Awards.

Starring Jamie Dornan, Caitriona Balfe, Judi Dench, Ciaran Hinds and 10-year-old Jude Hill, the film was released in the US on November 12.

Trina Vargo, founder of the US-Ireland Alliance said the film is a "beautifully written, semi-autobiographical screenplay that is a look at the city through the eyes of his (Branagh's) nine-year-old self".

"Set in 1969, it shows the idyllic joy of his childhood, overtaken by the violence that marked the beginning of what came to be known as the Troubles," she said.

"The film also serves as cautionary tale amidst the current uncertainties that Brexit has imposed upon the people of Northern Ireland, people who remember the Troubles and who want such violence left firmly in the past.”

During his career, Sir Kenneth has been nominated for five Oscars in five separate categories - actor, supporting actor, director, screenplay, and short.

In 2012 he received a knighthood for his services to drama and the community in Northern Ireland.

He was awarded the Freedom of Belfast in 2018.

Oscar-winning writer-director-producer Adam McKay, known for his work on The Big Short and Succession, and Irish actor Dónall Ó Héalai, will also be honoured at the awards.
