POLICE in Carrickfergus say nothing untoward was found during a security alert that saw a number of homes in the area evacuated.

The alert began on Sunday following the discovery of what was initially described as a "suspicious object" in the Hawthorne Avenue area of the Co Antrim town.

Residents were evacuated from homes and cordons were put in place while an investigation got underway. Motorists were also advised to avoid the area. The alert continued into Monday morning and ended shortly before noon.

PSNI Inspector Michelle Adams said yesterday: “Residents have now returned to their homes, and I am keen to thank those who were inconvenienced for their patience and understanding."
