A 31-year-old man killed in a road crash in Co Tyrone has been described as a "gentle giant" who will be much missed by those who knew him.

Darren Canavan (31) died following a one-vehicle collision in the Kilmascally Road area of Ardboe in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It is understood the married father-of-two had been driving a grey Mitsubishi Warrior car when the crash occurred shortly after 3am.

Police have urged anyone with information on the crash to contact them.

Sinn Féin Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill, who represents the area, said: "Darren is well known and respected locally, and this news is truly heartbreaking for his young family, friends and loved ones.

"I want to extend my deepest and heartfelt sympathy to Darren's family and friends at this very difficult time."

SDLP MLA Patsy McGlone said: "The community in Ardboe is in shock. This is a close knit area where people look out for one another. I know that local people will rally round the family and provide them the support they need as they come to terms with what has happened."

Ardboe O'Donovan Rossa GAC also paid tribute to Darren, writing in a social media post: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Canavan family at this time, particularly our youth player Ethan. Go raibh suaimhneas síoraí aige."

A gym at which Darren trained last night spoke of the loss felt in the Ardboe community.

A spokesman at LS Results told the Irish News: "Darren was a gentle giant who will be missed by every single person who knew him. He was well thought of and highly regarded in the area and he had a big heart. I'll miss my friend and my thoughts are with his family at this devastating time."

Separately a motorcyclist was killed following a collision in Renmore, Co Galway yesterday.

The man, who was in his 40s, was seriously injured when his motorbike was in collision with a car on the R338 Old Dublin Road at Renmore Park yesterday morning.

He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Meanwhile a 22-year-old motorcyclist is seriously ill in hospital after colliding with a car in Co Louth on Saturday night.

The crash on the N2 at Edmondstown, near Ardee, happened at 8.20pm as thousands of Tyrone fans returned home from Saturday’s All-Ireland final in Croke Park.

A garda spokesperson said the motorcyclist was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and remains in a serious condition.

The driver of the car and a passenger were treated by paramedics at the scene.

The emergency response saw the main N2 between Ardee and Carrickmacross closed with hundreds of northern bound vehicles diverted, causing lengthy delays.
