Parents facing prosecution over head injuries to baby

A Belfast-based father and mother are facing prosecution over the alleged infliction of serious head injuries to their baby.

The man and woman have both been charged with causing or allowing physical harm to the little girl within weeks of her birth.

Proceedings against the pair came before Belfast Magistrates' Court for the first time today.

Neither the 23-year-old man nor the woman, aged 21, are being named at this stage for legal reasons.

They are jointly accused in connection with an incident on June 1 this year.

It is understood police were alerted after their baby was taken to hospital with suspected swelling to the head.

Both defendants are charged with either causing serious physical harm or failing to take steps to protect the child, who is now in foster care.

The two accused are no longer in a relationship.

A detective told the court she could connect each of them to the alleged offence.

Defence solicitor Gavin Graham, representing the woman, confirmed he will be seeking reporting restrictions to protect the baby's identity.

Mr Graham also raised concerns about the safety of his client within the north Belfast community where she lives.

Adjourning the case for a week, District Judge Mark McGarrity granted continuing bail to both accused.
