Another four people have died after contracting Covid-19, the Department of Health has said in its daily update on the pandemic.

It brings the total number of deaths to 2,240.

A further 1,389 positive Covid cases have also been recorded.

It means there have been 172,866 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Over the past seven days, 9,405 people have tested positive.

As of this morning, there were 359 hospital patients with Covid-19. Of these, 44 are in intensive care and 32 are on ventilators.

Four hospitals in the north are operating beyond capacity, with the overall bed capacity at 103 per cent.

Latest statistics show 2,356,600 vaccines have been administered.

There are 122 outbreaks in care homes.

Today's figures were released after health chiefs warned of further surgery cancellations across Northern Ireland as staff are diverted to treat increasing numbers of Covid patients in intensive care.

The Health and Social Care Board said action was needed to increase ICU capacity in hospitals across the north and the only way to achieve that was to redeploy specialist staff working in other areas of the healthcare system.

The board also expressed concern at increasing numbers of unvaccinated young people and pregnant women being admitted to hospital with Covid-19.

Meanwhile, in the Republic there have been 1,978 new cases of Covid-19. There are 221 people in hospital with Covid-19, 43 of whom are being treated in intensive care units.
