SINN Féin assembly member Sinead Ennis last night called for movement on the long-awaited Narrow Water Bridge project.

The south Down MLA said as "we begin to exit the pandemic, it is now time for progress".

The bridge would span the picturesque Carlingford Lough between Omeath in Co Louth and Narrow Water Castle near Warrenpoint, Co Down.

Planning permission was granted in 2012, with funding secured from the European Union and governments on both sides of the border.

But the project was shelved the following year after it emerged costs had been significantly underestimated.

Despite an eleventh-hour bid to meet the shortfall, the withdrawal of EU funding, which led to Stormont pulling out, saw the proposal collapse.

In February, Stormont Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon reaffirmed her commitment to the cross-border project.

Speaking after she met representatives from Newry, Mourne and Down council and Louth council to discuss the "way forward in delivering" the scheme, she said she was "committed to the delivery of this iconic project".

But Ms Ennis last night urged progress.

"All of the commitments made in the New Decade, New Approach Agreement should be implemented, including Narrow Water Bridge and other key strategic projects," she said.

"This is a project that will deliver tangible benefits for the Warrenpoint area and for south Down.

"Sinn Féin have raised this directly with the British and Irish governments and at the North South Ministerial Council and I have lobbied the Infrastructure minister consistently on the issue."
