A BELFAST man who 'glassed' a woman in a bar in the east of the city has been jailed for 18 months.

The injured woman lost five teeth as a result of the violent incident, which occurred on the evening of August 19, 2019.

Sean Anderson, from Clyde Court, admitted causing the woman grievous bodily harm with intent, and was sentenced at Belfast Crown Court by Judge Donna McColgan QC.

The incident, which was captured on CCTV, occurred in the Strand Bar.

Anderson (25) went behind the bar and helped himself to a pint. He was removed by a member of staff, and a short time later he began interacting with a woman in the public bar area.

An altercation between Anderson and the woman ensued, and the CCTV captured Anderson bringing his left arm back before throwing a pint glass directly into the woman's face.

As a result of the impact, the woman lost four front teeth at the scene, whilst a fifth was later extracted. She also sustained a black eye and bruising to her face.

Anderson was arrested and during interview, he made the case that he had been drinking prior to entering the bar.

He also told police that after he poured himself a drink, the woman started shouting at him so he lifted the glass, tapped her in the face with it and set it back down.

Judge McColgan said "that is certainly not borne out from the CCTV footage", adding the incident was "unprovoked."

The judge said that after reading various reports on Anderson, it was clear he suffered from health issues.

Also noted by Judge McColgan was the "chaotic lifestyle" Anderson was living in August 2019 which included reckless behaviour brought about by alcohol misuse.
