The Irish News has announced a senior appointment to its editorial management team.

Fiona McGarry, who has worked in daily newspapers for 38 years, has been appointed Managing Editor.

She began her career as a journalist with the Belfast Telegraph in 1983, working as a news reporter and health correspondent before joining The Irish News in 1994.

In 1999, she was appointed Head of Content at the Irish News and has held the position of Assistant Editor since 2004.

Irish News editor Noel Doran said: `Fiona is a hugely respected journalist and I'm delighted that she is taking on a such a crucial role for the paper.'
