DUP MLA Edwin Poots returned to the assembly today just three weeks after undergoing surgery.

The Lagan Valley representative appeared in person in the Parliament Buildings' chamber even though new measures introduced this week enable remote participation in some circumstances.

Mr Poots stepped down from his role as agriculture minister at the beginning of this month to undergo surgery, with party colleague Gordon Lyons filling in on an interim basis.

In January, Mr Poots revealed he had been diagnosed with kidney cancer.

There was a cross-party welcome for the former health minister today from assembly colleagues.

TUV leader Jim Allister, Health Minister Robin Swann and health committee chair Colm Gildernew were among those welcoming Mr Poots back.

DUP MLA Pam Cameron described Mr Poots as an "incredibly robust man".

It so far unclear if and when the Lagan Valley MLA plans to resume his responsibilities as agriculture minister.
