Another seven people have died after contracting Covid-19, according to new figures.

There have now been 954 coronavirus deaths in Northern Ireland according to statistics from the Department of Health.

A further 533 cases of the virus have been recorded.

Hospitals across the north are treating 443 Covid patients. A total of 36 patients are in intensive care.

The latest figures come after the British government announced on Tuesday that three households can form bubbles so families can meet for Christmas.

The temporary easing of measures will allow three households to mix from December 23 to 27.

First Minister Arlene Foster and deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill joined the British government and other devolved nations to agree a common approach.

Dr Tom Black, chairman of the British Medical Association (BMA) in Northern Ireland, told BBC Radio Ulster's Stephen Nolan Show that families must try to maintain social distancing.

"If we can give the public guidelines as to what is reasonable and what’s too far, I think that will help rather than hinder," he said.

"If they can push the number of people to eight, 10 or maybe 12, if that includes granny, we try not to hug granny, we try to maintain social distancing as best we can, we put on a buffet instead of passing plates around the table - that's a way to limit the risk.

"But if you went out and told the matriarchs of Northern Ireland, their daughter wasn't coming from university, that their mother wasn't coming across town for Christmas dinner, you know and I know they would ignore us because they would think 'they don’t know what they are talking about'."

Dr Black added: "I am told we are going to get more detailed guidance on Thursday from the Executive so maybe that will answers some of the questions people will have."
