STORMONT'S sports minister has said she hopes her department gets "all the money that we need" for the redevelopment of Casement Park.

Carál Ní Chuilín told MLAs the "bulk of the money" for the west Belfast GAA stadium would come from the executive.

Last month the minister said the GAA must increase its contribution to help plug a £33m shortfall.

Her comments on the BBC's Sunday Politics programme were contrary to earlier remarks in which she said the extra money was "going to have to come from the executive".

Plans for the long-delayed stadium were recommended for approval last month.

It originally had a budget of around £77m, with Stormont pledging £62m and the GAA providing £15m – but its projected cost has since risen to £110m.

In the assembly, the SDLP's Justin McNulty asked Ms Ní Chuilín whether it was "unfair and inappropriate" to ask the GAA to pay more than £15m "and to have done so on a television programme".

Ms Ní Chuilín said the MLA should know any funding arrangement "will be an ongoing discussion" and that "it's not the first time that that has been said in public".

The Sinn Féin minister expressed hope that "we get all the money that we need to deliver Casement Park".

She added it was "unacceptable that gaelic games do not have a home that is fit for purpose for the 21st Century".

Speaking afterwards, Mr McNulty said: "It has been a long battle to get to this point, through no fault of the GAA and we cannot allow there to be any uncertainty on the funding available from the executive for this exciting flagship project."
