A series of murals have been completed this week as part of a regeneration project for historic entries in Belfast city centre.

The new public artworks at Joy's Entry, Pottinger's Entry and Winecellar Entry are part of an initiative which has seen seven city entryways receive a makeover in recent months.

The entries have also benefited from general repairs, repainting and new lighting.

Work begins next week on the final mural, which celebrates one of the first black abolitionists to visit Ireland, Olaudah Equiano.

Murals depicting Mary Ann McCracken and others such as Robert A Wilson have also been completed. Panels will be erected so that people can learn their links to the city.

Other murals nod to Belfast's punk scene and its linen and maritime history, and a water theme runs throughout the project, in reference to the River Farset.

The £870,000 initiative, scheduled for completion this autumn, has been funded by Belfast City Council and the Department for Communities.

Belfast lord mayor Frank McCoubrey said it was timely to shine a spotlight on the public art ahead of International Artists Day tomorrow.

"I'm delighted that we have been able to give local artists a platform to showcase their incredible talent, while at the same time transforming these historic entries and inspiring people to find out more about their connections to the past," he said.

Communities minister Carál Ní Chuilín said the revamped entries will "provide an exciting addition to the tourist experience in the city centre".

Dozens of utility boxes have also been transformed with colourful artwork as part of the Belfast Canvas project, a creative partnership with Destination CQ and Belfast One business improvement districts.

A virtual street art guide at belfastcity.gov.uk/public-art enables people to explore the Belfast Entries and Belfast Canvas artworks.
