ONE new coronavirus-related death has been recorded in Northern Ireland in the last 24 hours.

The overall toll has risen to 548 while the number of positive cases following testing rose by four to 1,538.

In the Republic, it was revealed 25 people with Covid-19 are being treated in hospitals.

Figures from the Health Service Executive show that as of 8pm on Thursday, 12 were in intensive care. A further four people suspected of having the virus were also being treated in ICUs.

At the peak of the pandemic in mid-April, there were 160 patients in ICUs.

A scientist, meanwhile, has warned about the dangers of "over-stating" the number of people breaking social distancing rules.

On Thursday, people flocked to beaches and Liverpool fans gathered at Anfield to celebrate the team winning the Premier League.

Professor Stephen Reicher said aerial shots suggested "most people were still trying to keep a two metre distance".

"The danger of over-stating the problem is that you create a norm," he said.

"You're told that everybody else is breaking the lockdown, and it makes you think there's no point in me doing it as well.

"Maintain social and physical distancing, but let's not underestimate the people who are adhering and the atypicality of those who are not."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said crowds on Bournemouth beach suggested people needed to understand that "mingling too much" could set the UK back.

He said people in other countries had been "taking too many liberties with the guidance" as lockdown rules eased.

A further 186 deaths of people who had tested positive for coronavirus in the UK were announced on Friday, bring the total number to have died to 43,414.
