DUP MLA David Hilditch has been warned of a threat against him.

The East Antrim representative said police informed him of the threat.

"I was visited late last night by police and alerted to a threat against myself involving the use of a firearm," he said.

"I have been a public representative for nearly thirty years but I will not be deterred from that work by faceless people."

DUP leader Arlene Foster said: "There is absolutely no place for threats against any elected representative and we all must make it clear that the criminals involved in such activity will not succeed.

"As party colleagues we stand with David as I know the people of East Antrim and beyond will also."

The warning came a week after loyalist paramilitaries threatened a string of MLAs who condemned UDA threats against journalists.

SDLP MLA Patsy McGlone, Ulster Unionist leader Steve Aiken and Ulster Unionist MLA Doug Beattie were warned of threats against them from loyalists.

Alliance MP Stephen Farry also said he had been threatened.

Members of the UDA's South East Antrim faction are understood to be behind planned attacks on journalists working for the Sunday World and Sunday Life newspapers, both of which are owned by Independent News & Media.

Planned attacks included planting a booby-trap device under a journalist's car.
