TWO men have been arrested after an ice-cream van was hijacked in west Belfast.

It happened on Tuesday night near a roundabout in the Lagmore View area.

Police received a report at about 9pm that two men approached the driver of the ice-cream van.

There was a brief verbal exchange before the pair got inside and drove the van towards Mount Eagles Road, onto Lagmore Avenue and Teeling Avenue where the vehicle was found abandoned.

A sum of money was reported stolen from the van, and damage was caused to a dash cam.

The vehicle was also reported to have collided with a parked vehicle.

A man in the area at the time was assaulted and was checked by paramedics at the scene.

Police later arrested two men aged 23 and 28.

The 23-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol and taking a motor vehicle without authority.

The 28-year-old was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs, taking a motor vehicle without authority and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Both men remained in police custody yesterday morning.

Police urged anyone with information to phone 101, quoting reference number 1796 18/02/20, or the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

It comes after Glider bus services in the Colin neighbourhood were withdrawn for a period on Monday night following two attacks on vehicles by youths throwing missiles.

In one of the incidents, a teenage girl who was a passenger on a Glider service narrowly escaped injury when a window was smashed.
