STORMONT'S infrastructure minister Nichola Mallon has pledged to minimise her carbon footprint during her first day in the new job.

The SDLP deputy leader arrived at Stormont yesterday in an electric car.

The newly appointed minister (40) was pictured beside the electric vehicle as she began her role, which will involve making decisions on major road upgrades such as the York Street interchange, the A5/A6, Magee Campus and Narrow Water Bridge.

A spokesperson for the Department of Infrastructure said that Ms Mallon intends to use the electric car instead of the ministerial Skoda "as much as possible" on official duties, except when diary commitments mean it is not possible.

In a post on Twitter, the SDLP described the North Belfast assembly member as "electric".

"Our minister Nichola Mallon starting as she means to go on and minimising the impact of her travel on the environment," it said
