A Co Tyrone faith healer has been cleared of sexual assault after prosecutors offered no evidence but accepted charges of assault.

Robert John Coote (74), of Loughrans Road, Aughnacloy was originally accused of single counts of sexually assaulting three women on various dates, but last week one of these was withdrawn ahead of a trial.

A jury was sworn in yesterday in preparation for trial at Dungannon Crown Court on the remaining counts, which were alleged to have occurred in January 2015 and November 2016.

Mr Coote pleaded not guilty to both charges and the case was adjourned to allow for legal discussions, which took place over several hours.

On returning, two additional lesser charges of assaults with no sexual context were added, which Mr Coote accepted.

A lawyer for the Public Prosecution Service also told the court he was offering no evidence on the sex charges.

Judge Paul Ramsay ordered the jury to find Mr Coote not guilty of these by direction, on the grounds no sexual contact occurred.

He ordered reports ahead of sentencing which will take place in January.
