A loud bang in a Co Antrim seaside town was caused by a "crude pipe bomb type device".

It is understood a property was damaged in the Mill Street area of Cushendall at around 11.10pm on Wednesday.

Officers attended the scene where damage had been caused to a door and its frame, part of a wall and to two cars parked in the vicinity.

Detective Inspector Peter McKenna said: "Following a detailed examination of the scene of the incident on Mill Street I believe the damage was caused by a crude pipe bomb type device. A number of remnants of the device have been removed for further examination."

Politicians last night condemned the attack.

Sinn Féin councillor Oliver McMullan urged the PSNI “to make a speedy investigation” and “let the public know what exactly happened”.

“These are the questions the public are asking and as an elected representative in the area I would like to be able to let the people know."

Mr McMullan added that “this is something we don’t want in the Glens and thankfully nobody was hurt”.

SDLP councillor Margaret Anne McKillop also said she was “shocked” by the incident.

“People here are totally opposed to this,” she said.

“We don’t want this kind of violence in our area.

“Those responsible need to get off our backs and should be brought to justice."
